In many African countries, religious leaders are highly respected. In some contexts, leaders of large religious groups have more social power and influence than national political leaders. In Senegal, presidents and politicians are careful not to “lock horns” with powerful Muslim leaders.
Common people in Senegal are taught to “stay in your lane.” A high cultural value is called teggin in Wolof. It means knowing your place—knowing people over you who you should respect and yield to, and knowing those under you who you can give directions to.
So, cultural and religious teggin means a common person (mechanic, schoolteacher, businessman, housewife) has no business questioning a religious leader who has spent decades memorizing the Quran and studying Islam. The Quranic teacher and mosque leader is to be shown the respect, honor, and deference due him.
How can a gospel movement begin in a culture where Islamic leaders hold so much sway over the people?
“Nations will fear the name of the Lord,
and all the kings of the earth will fear your glory.” (Psalm 102:15)
(The Parable of the Hidden Treasure) “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.” (Matthew 13:44)
We pray for many today to see You, Jesus, for the treasure You are. We pray for Senegalese in every segment of society to joyfully give up all they have in order to gain You. We pray they would find in Jesus the hope, joy, peace and eternal security they long for deep down in their souls.
“And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and their boundaries of their dwelling place, that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each of us…” (Acts 17:26-27)
We confess your sovereignty in the midst of the many challenges and uncertainties in Senegal. We pray, Father, that you would use these circumstances to draw many Senegalese to yourself. You, Lord, created each people group in Senegal. You outlined their boundaries and their histories. We pray, Father, that tens of thousands of Muslims would discover Jesus and build their tomorrows on the strong foundation of the only Messiah.
“By faith Joseph, at the end of his life, made mention of the exodus of the Israelites and gave directions concerning his bones.” (Hebrews 11:22)
We pray for Christian leaders in Senegal to be so certain of Your promises, that they would have the foresight now to prepare for the day when there are multiplying churches in every neighborhood in the country by training and equipping all believers in scalable ways. Father, please give your Church in Senegal the faith Joseph had regarding your faithfulness to your promises.
We pray for believers in Senegal to know what a “person of peace” is and where to find one. Would you bring lost seekers of truth into contact with faithful Christians who will open up the word of God with them. When they discover the Truth of who Jesus is, may they have the courage to give up everything in order to follow him.
