The relatively small Church in Senegal is slowly growing, but it is not keeping up with the population growth. Most of the believers are from other countries or from small minority groups that have been oppressed by the larger people groups. Particularly the influential Wolof and Peul are probably not going to be influenced by the Gospel message from these believers.
In addition, traditional church planting models and strategies are often slow and expensive. If we want to see Christ’s church widely established in Senegal, we must do something different.
In the last thirty years God has been on the move in the Muslim world. More than 60 new Muslim movements to Christ were reported in the first decade of the 21st century. A ‘gospel movement’ is defined as at least 100 new [house] churches that have multiplied to the fourth generation or beyond within a relatively short period of time.
“God reigns over the nations;
God sits on his holy throne.” (Psalm 47:8)
“For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:20)
Many Muslims believe that Christians have an easier ’religion’ because of misunderstanding the Gospel of grace through Christ Jesus. We pray for the humbleness and holiness of every believer in Senegal to shine forth and for many Muslims to be drawn to Jesus through the authentic witness of Christ in His disciples.
“And the word of God continued to increase, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests became obedient to the faith.” (Acts 6:7)
Through consistent prayer, the teaching of God’s Word, service to others, care for the widows, and humble faith, multiply the number of your people in Senegal, Lord.
“By faith Noah, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen, in reverent fear constructed an ark for the saving of his household…” (Hebrews 11:7a)
We pray for many heads of household who, like Noah, would take outrageous risks for the sake of saving their families. May they be bold and courageous in leading their wives and children to the saving ark of Jesus.
Lord, raise up evangelists and apostles that the Wolof and Peul will respect. Call imams and Koranic teachers to faith in Christ who will then will teach their followers from your Word. May small but vibrant churches be established all across Senegal for the fame of your righteous Name.
