Senegal 2023

The six million Wolof living in Senegal make up nearly 40% of the country’s population. Traditionally, the Wolof have been influential traders which is one reason the Wolof language is widely spoken among all ethnic groups.

Many Wolof still live in villages of 50-300 people headed by a chief. They are largely subsistence farmers growing peanuts, millet, and beans using one-row planters drawn by a donkey or horse. Wolof living in urban settings have become mechanics, business owners, nurses, doctors, teachers, lawyers, and government officials.

The Wolof strongly embrace their centuries-old Islamic traditions and are proud and content Muslims. There are very few Wolof Christians. Sixty years of gospel efforts have produced fewer than 150 Christians among the 6 million Wolof in Senegal today.

Being such a large percentage of the population of Senegal and having such strong influence over the culture, reaching the Wolof is key to reaching all of Senegal.

PRAISE

“I will cause your name to be remembered in all generations;
therefore nations will praise you forever and ever.” (Psalm 45:17)

KINGDOM COME

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:3)

May the Senegalese church joyfully demonstrate the blessing that comes from being poor in spirit. Pray for them to experience fuller measures of the Kingdom through their poverty of spirit.

PRAY THE BOOK OF ACTS

“And now, Lord, look upon their threats and grant to your servants to continue to speak your word with all boldness, while you stretch out your hand to heal, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of your holy servant Jesus.” (Acts 4:30-31)

Do it, Lord, please! Father, enable your people to live abundantly in your power. Give your people courage and strength to live faithfully and winsomely before their Muslim friends and neighbors.

PRAY THE HALL OF FAITH

“…Now before he (Enoch) was taken he was commended as having pleased God.” (Hebrews 11:5b)

May believers in Senegal, through faith, seek commendation and blessing from you more than from man. May they live their lives in pursuit of your approval alone.

PRAYER

God, we pray the small body of Christian men and women of Senegal will seek ways to meet in groups of two or three to encourage, support, and love one another.
