Senegal was a French colony until 1960. During almost 75 years of colonial rule, the French colonial government endeavored to impose the French language, culture, and Catholic religion on millions of people in West Africa.
Not surprisingly, this cultural and religious imposition was strongly resented and opposed by the vast majority of the people of Africa. The Wolof and Peul fought particularly long and hard against French colonial forces and rejected the imposed new religion and culture. However, with superior military weapons, the French gradually subdued the resistance of Senegal’s ruling tribes. Over several decades the French government controlled and exploited the people of Senegal in a variety of ways.
To many Senegalese, leaving Islam to become a Christian is to concede to and side with the despised colonial masters. Sadly, many West African Muslims still view Christians through the lens of this sorrowful and sinful period of “Christian” history. The sins and offenses of distant history still influences the way exploited peoples perceive those calling themselves Christian.
“I will give thanks to you, O Lord, among the peoples;
I will sing praises to you among the nations.” (Psalm 108:3)
(The Parable of the Pearl of Great Value) “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it.” (Matthew 13:45-46)
Thank you for every man and woman in Senegal who has found you to be the pearl of great price. We pray their valuing and treasuring of you, Jesus, will lead thousands of others to enter your Kingdom.
“Crispus, the ruler of the synagogue, believed in the Lord, together with his entire household. And many of the Corinthians hearing Paul believed and were baptized.” (Acts 18:8)
We pray for many religious leaders in Senegal to believe in you, together with their entire households, and may it lead to entire neighborhoods and cities being reached with the Gospel. Lord, religious leaders in Senegal have great influence on the masses. Would you bring some of them to solid, humble faith and give them wisdom and courage in leading some of their followers to bow before King Jesus.
“By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden for three months by his parents, because they saw that the child was beautiful, and they were not afraid of the king’s edict.” (Hebrews 11:23)
Thank you Lord for the example of Moses’ parents. We pray for believers in Senegal to fear God more than they fear anyone or anything else. We pray for Christian parents in Senegal to protect them from evil influences and to build them up strong in the knowledge and wisdom of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Father, we pray for believers in Senegal to commit themselves to praying and fasting for their families and friends who do not know you as Savior. Give these Christians passion and perseverance in living a life of integrity and love before those who do not yet obey and worship you. May their lives and love overcome the ugly and painful history so called “Christians” in this land.
