After many years of diligent and painstaking work, the Wolof and Peul Bibles are almost complete. Many are praying the Bibles in both of these languages will go to print within the next year or so.
Portions of the Bible have been available in the Wolof language for many years—Genesis, Proverbs, many Psalms, and the New Testament. A handful of missionaries and several national Christians have been working tirelessly to translate the entire Holy Scriptures into these important languages for over 50 years.
Over 13 million people speak Wolof in Senegal though only 6 million are ethnically Wolof. Since Wolof is a widely used trade language, a Wolof Bible could reach over 13 million people in twenty ethnic groups with God’s precious written word.
“Let the peoples praise you, O God;
let all the peoples praise you!” (Psalm 67:3)
“And Jesus said to his disciples, ’Truly, I say to you, only with difficulty will a rich person enter the kingdom of heaven.’” (Matthew 19:23)
We know nothing can hinder the Lord from saving (1 Samuel 14:6), so Lord we ask you to be working in the hearts of the wealthy and well-connected in Senegal. The highly educated and affluent are often movers and shakers in the culture. Father, in your grace, soften their hearts and open their spiritual eyes to see the truth of Your Word. Then lead them to use their resources, education, and influence for your kingdom purposes.
“So I always take pains to have a clear conscience toward both God and man.” (Acts 24:16)
Lord, give believers in Senegal humble perseverance and sincerity in going to such pains and effort as Paul describes here. May it result in many friends, family members, coworkers, and neighbors being drawn to a loving and patient God who brings transformation from the inside out.
“By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after they had been encircled for seven days.” (Hebrews 11:30)
May every spiritual and cultural wall that separates Senegalese men and women from Christ fall down as we faithfully pray and obey his commands. Father, would you break down the walls of shaming and family pressure that keep people from openly coming to Jesus.
Father, we thank you with joy that the Bible printed in the Wolof and Peul languages will soon be available for Christians to read. Thank you for the many missionaries and Senegalese who labored year in and year out for decades to ensure that your word was accurate and understandable in these two important languages. May your written word bless believers with strength and hope, and may it give light and truth to those still in spiritual darkness! Amen!
