Probably the most visible and proselytizing brotherhood in Senegal is the Mourides. Preaching industriousness, religious community cohesion, and strong devotion to local Muslim religious leaders, they live all over the world, but their religious center is focused on their holy city of Touba in Senegal.
An Islamic spiritual guide, Amadou Bamba Mbacke (1853-1927), led a pacifist rebellion against French colonialists and founded the Mouride brotherhood. Twice Mbacke was exiled to another African country by French colonial leaders due to his powerful influence over devotees and fear of their collective rebellion. Twelve years of exile produced many hagiographic stories of Mbacke’s miraculous endurance of hardships and deprivation at the hands of the French, which only elevated his status and veneration. Many of his followers believe Mbacke (and other significant biblical and Islamic prophets) was in heaven with Allah before Allah created the world.
Today, three to four million Senegalese still venerate Mbacke and his male descendants, believing they will be guaranteed heaven on the coattails of these holy men. Hundreds still pray daily at his mausoleum in Touba, imploring his mediation with Allah. The bodies of deceased Mourides are flown back to Touba from all over the world to be buried in Touba’s huge Mouride cemeteries as a final statement of allegiance to and confidence in the power of Amadou Mbacke to mediate for them with Allah and to carry them to heaven.
“May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face to shine upon us,
that your way may be known on earth, your saving power among all nations.” (Psalm 67:1-2)
“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33)
We pray that Your Kingdom would be our first priority. May Your Kingdom values and purposes be the primary focus of every Christian in Senegal.
“But when they believed Philip as he preached good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.” (Acts 8:12).
Empower believers in Senegal to preach and live out the good news of the Kingdom and prepare multitudes of men and women to respond and be baptized.
“By faith he went to live in the land of promise as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise. For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God.” (Hebrews 11:9-10)
May Senegalese Christians embrace their secure heavenly citizenship and rest in being confirmed into heaven’s customs, language, priorities, and values in ever-increasing measures.
God, we pray thousands of Mourides and other Muslims in Senegal would come to recognize the only One who has sufficient merit with the Father to carry us into heaven. Would you bless them with eyes to see the glory of the gospel in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus the Nazarene.
